Facebook Hiatus

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Dear friends,
I am currently on a Facebook hiatus until I can get a few things figured out. I won’t disappear forever. In fact, I will probably be back up today or tomorrow! Hooray!

In one week, it’s Darwin’s birthday. Happy Birthday week, Darwin! Let’s celebrate by learning more about evolution and teaching it to others.  Spread the happiness!

Education: kindergarten

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Did you know that kindergarten is not required in Minnesota?
Here is part of the law:

Subd. 5. Ages and terms. (a) Every child between
seven and 16 years of age must receive instruction. Every child
under the age of seven who is enrolled in a half-day
kindergarten, or a full-day kindergarten program on alternate
days, or other kindergarten programs shall receive instruction.
Except as provided in subdivision 6, a parent may withdraw a
child under the age of seven from enrollment at any time.

Are you okay with that? I’m not!
I am very pro-education.  Kindergarten provides several things that are wonderful for the development of children. In addition to education, school provides a social environment in which children can learn to interact with other people. Another very important thing is learning to be independent. Believe it or not, it’s good for children to grow up and gain independence! Do you really want them living in your basement in thirty years?

Darwin Day!

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

There is a petition to make February 12th Darwin Day. You should all go sign it here.

Scientists and non-scientists around the world (rightfully) appreciate the work of Charles Darwin. He is an important historical figure, and it is about time he is more formally publicly recognized. We need to show a greater appreciation for science and the discoveries the process has made possible.

Now all you apes go and sign the petition!
Also, remember that science isn’t a belief system. It’s a method of learning and discovery.

Spread the word to let Obama know that we want a scientist in the spotlight.

Good night to my fellow mammals.
